Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy Procedure

The procedure of sleeve gastrectomy is performed laparoscopically. This involves creating 4 or 5 small incisions in the abdomen. A laparoscope, an instrument with a tiny camera attached to it, is inserted through the incisions to view the internal abdominal parts. With instruments inserted through the other incisions, about 75% of stomach is removed and a narrow tube or sleeve is left behind.
The main characteristic of this procedure is that, no intestinal removal involved here. Also, this procedure does not cause malabsorption as in other bariatric surgery procedures. This helps in preventing nutrient deficiency.
